Founded in 1979, the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) is a leading legal research institution in Nigeria. NIALS builds the capacity of lawyers and judges in various criminal justice issues. The Foundation`s previous award at NIALS helped strengthen criminal justice reform in Nigeria. This renewal supports the development of a curriculum for trainers on the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and the State Administration of Criminal Law (ACJL) for the National Association of Law Teachers; CAJA case summaries and policy briefs on case law and substantive decisions; advocacy and participation in the legislative and constitutional review of CAJA; developing judicial rules to support the effective implementation of the CAJA; review of judicial appointment guidelines; and the development of guidelines for criminal justice actors in the context of COVID-19. This award is part of a package of six grants that contribute to Nigeria`s criminal justice strategy, which aims to strengthen and deepen the legal framework for the prosecution of criminal cases through the implementation of ACJA and ACJL.
